I defend Josh’s right to talk about things he hasn’t yet read. If the weblog is a sort of journal, why can’t he catalogue his intentions? Besides, what makes one an authority on a subject? Reading a dust jacket—the novel entire—extensive criticism on it; intimacy with the author? Don’t we already discuss films and award ceremonies and politics in sound bites? Why can’t we do the same with writing? Perhaps writers are also readers, and they will find what you say and retaliate. But people offer commentary & criticism on the meanest of details, such as a book cover on which, I’m told, we aren’t supposed to hang a judgment.
